Change your weigh ... at a deeper level

Turn up to any gym, anywhere in the world in the first week of January and you’ll find it packed with motivated, resolution-making go-getters. Good luck trying to move amidst all that lycra and the trailing defibrillator cords as people smash out their new year goals.

Go back a few weeks later and it’ll be a much different story.

Why is it that we launch into our weight loss goals full throttle but then lose steam and before long, the only activity our gym membership sees is the monthly movement from our bank account?

I’m betting you’re nodding your head right about now, having been there yourself. You start off with great intentions to building a healthier, leaner you and you feel great for it, but then the motivation goes AWOL, your gym excuses become epic and you wind up back in your bathroom, looking down at your scales, seeing no change from your efforts so turn to the comfort food and begin feeling like a failure all over again.

Think back to that dedicated commitment we made. Imagine if we had have kept at it. Just think of the years of inner turmoil we would have saved ourselves.

So why can’t we keep it up long-term?

Well, science is now telling up that it has a lot to do with our subconscious mind and how we have been programmed over the years.

So, as Meatloaf once said, two out of three aint bad … (but sadly it aint good enough). We can have a conscious desire to lose weight and the ability to make a conscious plan (join the gym, start a diet etc) but if your subconscious mind doesn’t get the memo, those familiar negative thoughts, limiting beliefs and destructive patterns of behaviour will be the anchor holding you down from soaring to your goals.

So, the key lays in getting the message through to your subconscious mind (let’s call it Barry, to save reading subconscious mind all the time) so that it is aligned to your goals and doesn’t throw a spanner in the works. This is not to say that Barry is out to get you, quite the contrary, but when you have certain beliefs and values around food, Barry will generate loads of evidence to support you … and those beliefs.

Changing these behaviours and beliefs is no walk in the park, especially if you try to do it alone. You’ve made a habit out of them and they are familiar and comfortable, like an old comfy coat. Changing these out for new patterns of behaviour can often be viewed as a threat by Barry, who will then amp up the destructive talk and familiar way of being in the aim of getting you to stop and resume the original program. Again, not because Barry’s a bastard, but because Barry’s your number one fan and will do anything to keep you safe, secure and away from threatening situations like new ways of being (and the gym).

It’s easy to see why Barry jumps to that conclusion, anything out of the ordinary may create a threat and cause you to be vulnerable. Self-preservation is our number one driver and Barry’s too … so the best outcome, as far as Barry is concerned is to get you back to the starting blocks, back into familiar territory a-sap!

Now, we don’t want to bugger Barry off all together. We all need our inner Barry to keep us safe if a bus is hurtling towards us or we hear a loud bang, but when Barry sees everything as a threat, things can go pear shaped, health wise pretty fast.

Barry just needs a bit of guidance at the right level. When we bypass our critical factor and stop it running interference, we can whisper into Barry’s ear a soothing “there there” of sorts and show him that a positive life change is not only good, but essential for your longevity.

Now, although I’ve made light of Barry, it’s imperative that you understand that your body is merely a robot for your subconscious mind. The goals, values, desires and beliefs held in this part of your mind trigger your body into action. Unless the thought is there, your body won’t react. Without instruction, there is no behaviour.

No matter how strong a commitment your conscious mind is prepared to make, without “Team Subconscious” being on board it’ll be domed from the start.

So, how do we create profound change at a subconscious level? Well, you can use positive affirmations regularly and you can practise visualisation exercises, but both of these take time and effort. The most direct and rapid way to change is via hypnotherapy.

Not all hypnotherapy is the same though. Pre-recorded, hypnosis audios are great in the interim, but if you want long-lasting, deep-rooted change, you need to select a hypnotherapist (like me) who will spend some time with you and specially design a hypnosis session tailor made, only for you. A qualified and diligent hypnotherapist (like me again lol) will note down your dreams, your goals and what achieving them will look like and then embed those exact words back into the session so that your subconscious mind recognises your own, familiar language and grabs it with every neuron as it shouts “Lock it in Eddie!”

A specifically designed session is like an update for your mind. It will reprogram you into a person who enjoys healthy foods, looks forward to exercising (I kid you not) and finds it easy to resist the temptation of returning to old ways.

This new mindset will then become the new normal for you and Barry will power alongside of you as you race towards your goals. Ironically, Barry will see this way of being as your new comfy coat and a shift to eating unhealthily and not moving your body will become the new definition of a threat, aka the nasty pastie Barry tries to steer you away from.

No longer will you need to wait for January 1 to roll around. You can find your mojo now, and discover that losing weight becomes effortless, enjoyable and sustainable.

How do I know that it works? Because I’m in the process of transforming myself from a fat bod to a fit bod as we speak. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but neither was I … but I no longer wish for the ice cream to stop calling me, or the Dominos delivery car to break down.

Instead, I see food as fuel not comfort and the gift of being able to love who I am, without all the destructive mind chatter is better than any diamond or monster IKEA sale.

Let me know when you’re ready to unwrap that gift for yourself and let’s get cracking!
